Center Policies

Class Attendance

On Center days your child will spend 20 - 30 minutes in class per subject. This time may vary depending on level, age, and worksheets assigned. Parents are responsible for their children once they leave the work room.  Junior Kumon students make an appointment for their center visit.  Regular Kumon students may come anytime between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Class attendance is a vital part of the Kumon program. Observing students at work in class assists greatly in the planning process for that student. We also prefer to introduce new concepts in class so we may assist your child in reaching his Kumon goals. If a student is unable to attend class, please call the Center by 10:00 a.m. the day of class. This will allow us the time to make adjustments to the student's plan and prepare the work to be picked up.

Vacations

Kumon homework is assigned every day of the year unless requested in writing one week prior to the date of adjustment. Parents should complete an "Absence Notification Form," available in the Parent Waiting area, at least one week prior to the absence. Please indicate the class days to be missed and any adjustments required for the student's work. We strongly encourage students to continue their Kumon study during vacations. All work will be prepared in advance and given to the student on his last center day before the vacation.

Absence Policy

A student who, for whatever reason, does not take any Kumon materials in a given month, but who plans to resume Kumon study within 2 months, is considered absent. An absent student is considered discontinued after two consecutive months of absence. If a discontinued student resumes Kumon study the registration fee will be charged and the student must take a placement test.

We welcome your feedback. Please feel free to ask questions and share concerns. Conferences may be scheduled anytime during the year.

Homework Grading

When you take on the task of Home Grading, you'll be relieved to know that five minutes each day is all the time it takes.  What's more, Home Grading can accelerate your child's learning, and the reasons make perfect sense:

  • It allows your child to learn immediately from mistakes by correcting them while they're still fresh in mind.
  • It often leads to greater concentration and effort, because your child knows that work will be checked immediately.
  • It lets you monitor your child's progress more closely, and provide more timely encouragement.
  • It allows more Kumon Center time to be spent on the next order of business rather than on work already completed.
  • It strengthens your understanding of the Kumon Method, which in turn can make you more effective in assisting your child.

In addition to its potential positive impact on your child's learning, Home Grading sends a very important message to your child:  I'm your partner in Kumon, and in learning.  I'm with you every step of the way.

General Guidelines

  • Grade assignments as soon and your child completes them.
  • Grade and review assignments when your child is present and paying attention, not by yourself.
  • Make sure your child's name, the date, and starting/ending time are filled in at the top of the first sheet.  If not, have your child fill them in before grading.
  • Use a red pen for grading.
  • Start on the back of the worksheet and end up on the front where the grading scale is located.
  • Once all the worksheets have been graded and corrected, put them in the homework pouch and hand them in at your next Center visit.
  • RELAX!  Assignments are always rechecked at the Kumon Center before grades are entered into your child's records.

Best Practices

We provide here some great resources and learning activities for your child to learn and have fun.  Through practice, your child will build a strong foundation for future learning.  Please read the instructions carefully and follow as directed to help your child master the basic.  Let the instructor know if you have any questions on how to use these.

  • For Math kids in levels 3A through B, this document will provide great ways to help build strong foundation in addition facts.

  • For the time your child has reached Math Level B101, print and use the multiplication tables sheet to have the child practice the tables every day.

  • These divisibility rules need to be kept in mind and used when students are doing long divisions!
